Michel Camilo

Michel Camilo was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Fascinated by music since childhood, he composed his first song at age 5 and studied for 13 years at the National Conservatory culminating in a professorship; At age 16 he became a member of the National Symphony Orchestra in his country. With the idea of broadening his musical horizon, he moved to New York in 1979, where he continued his studies at Mannes and Juilliard School of Music. A brilliant technical pianist and composer who brings Caribbean rhythms and jazz harmonies to his songs; the composition of him Why not! it became a recorded hit by Paquito D'Rivera on one of his albums, which was a Grammy winner (1983) on the vocal version of the Manhattan Transfer.
